10 karat known as 10K or 10kt gold contains 10 parts gold and 14 parts another metal or metals. 10K is 41.7% gold.
10k gold is the minimum karat designation that can still be called gold in the US. 9K gold is used in England.

14 karat known as 14K, 14KP, 14kt gold contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts another metal or metals. 14K 58.3% gold.

18 karat known as 18K or 18kt gold contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts another metal or metals. 18k is 75% gold.

24 karat (24K) gold is pure gold.

You may also see a number marked on your gold:

750 is 18K gold

585 is 14K gold

417 is 10K gold

If you see for example 14K then GP, GF, or HGE this is plated junk or costume. You will see 1/10 14K GF, or 1/20 12K GF this is gold filled. HGE is heavy gold electro plate. GP is gold plate.
